When Your Haircut Goes Wrong.

We’ve all had at least one bad haircut. You enter the salon excited for your new look and you leave feeling disappointed and wishing you’d never gone in the first place. A bad experience can put you off going back and the next thing you know you’ve become your own stylist and you’re stood in your bathroom with kitchen scissors watching a YouTube video called “How to cut your own layers.”

So, what can we do instead of becoming our very own Edward Scissorhands?

Wash and Style Yourself –

No one can style your own curls like you can so before you completely write off your cut, wash and style it yourself. You might instantly like it better!

Let It Settle –

Curl shock is a real thing although no one can really decide why it happens. For a week or two after your cut your hair can have a mind of its own. The curls won’t clump properly, they may not hold as well and they can look a little limp and lifeless. Rest assured that this normally only lasts for a few washes.

Speak To Your Stylist –

An open dialogue can go a long way if you’re not happy, so explain to them how you feel and what you’re not liking about your cut. Or if you don’t feel comfortable and able to do that, get a second opinion. If you’ve got enough length left, they may be able to fix the issue without you having to wait to grow it out.

Utilise Accessories –

If you have no choice but to grow your cut out then utilise headbands and hair clips. An unwanted fringe can be pinned back for example and a headband hides a multitude of sins. Try some fun updo’s too!

Change Your Part –

A different parting can change the whole look and shape of your cut. Try a middle parting or simply flipping it to the other side.

Try New Styling Techniques –

Many curlies get stuck in a little bit of a rut and stick to the same styling techniques for fear of a bad washday. But now is the perfect time to experiment with different ways of styling. If you’re not liking your hair anyway, a few failed washdays won’t matter and you never know, you might find a new one your hair loves!

Focus On Scalp Health –

It can feel like curly hair takes twice as long as straight hair to grow thanks to all that bounce so make sure that you’re focusing on scalp health. A healthy scalp will only grow healthy hair! Do your scalp massages, clarify regularly, drink your water and you’ll be amazed how quickly it will grow!
